Investigation Leads

To gather all the information for a crime such as a murder case, certain procedures need to be taken in to place in order to catch the right suspect for the case. In order for this to happen specific forensic strategies are used to collect the acquired evidence from the murder scene, this could mean fingerprints, bodily fluids (such as saliva, semen or blood) or traces of DNA that have been left on the crime scene by the suspect.

When the evidence is collected, bagged, sealed and sent off in transportation to be securely authorised in to the evidence labs the evidence is than analysised by professional specific for their area of expertise. When the evidence has been analysed and the pathology results are processed the information can then be reported to authorities were further action can be taken for example if blood samples come back matching to a suspect.

In order for the investigation to progress further, leads can be found through surveillance such as CCTV. By looking at CCTV this would be able to get an overall summary of what happened at the scene and could give a possible of a suspect if seen on the CCTV. Another was to investigate a further lead would be to organise house-to-house inquiries. This would be able to further the information already taken by witnesses at the scene of the crime.

However house-to-house inquiries might add that small amount of information that can pro-long the investigation. Depending on the type of crime that has been committed there could be further investigation in to any financial investigations if there was any trouble or management issue with the victim being in debt etc.

Certain strategy is used when there are potential suspects for a crime. This strategy is trace, interview and eliminate (TIE). Evidence from the crime scene such as fingerprints are used to trace any potential victims that have been at that scene. Once the potential suspects have been traced they are than took in to custody they are than interviewed. Once the interview has toke place further investigation will go on to discuss whether the potential suspect is eliminated or is kept hold of for further questioning.

The O.J. Simpson Case

In the murder case of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman a primary suspect was already concluded, this suspect was Orenthal James Simpson. However at the time the murder took place O.J.Simpson was set to leave for a business trip to Chicago from Los Angeles. When O.J. Simpson landed in Chicago and was reported of the murder of his ex wife he cancelled his business meetings and returned to Los Angeles at the earliest he could. When Simpson arrived back in Los Angeles he was handcuffed and took in to custody for questioning on the murder of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman. During Simpson's time in custody Robert Shapiro was contacted on Simpsons behalf and was asked to become his defense counselor. The suspicion of O.J.Simpson being guilty only grew when he fled Robert Kardashian's home when he was about to be arrested for murder. This then resulted in a high speed car chase, however when he returned home he was arrested.

When O.J.Simpson was took in to custody 1.5ml of his blood was taken for analysis to be compared to suspect blood that was found at the murder scene of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman. However, the blood taken from Simspon was not logged in to the chain of custidy until hours after the blood was taken. Also the amount of how much blood was taken was not recorded either. Therefore when the blood finally reached the forensic labs there was blood 'missing', yet this could not be reported as 'lost' blood as the exact amount was not recorded when taken from Simspon.

As there was no CCTV or surveillance covering the murder scene of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman, witness statements were took by officers from eye witnesses who were around the scene around the time of the murder. House-to-house inquiries were also made by officers in order to collect more witness statements from any neighbours or members of the public that might have seen anyone suspicious or heard anything around the time of the murder.
