Roles and Responsibilities
A criminal investigation detective works with the public and law enforcement agencies in order to find information and analyse it. At a crime scene a CID is responsible for collecting evidence, preserving and processing it, so that the piece of evidence can be logged in to the chain of custody and sent to forensic laboratories. A CID can also person DNA analysis, interpret bloodstain patterns and examine tissues. When arriving at a crime scene, if not already don't so by the first attending officer the criminal investigation detective should corner off the crime scene in order to secure and preserve the scene and its evidence. It is also the CID who determines whether sketches, measurements, photographs, or videos need to be taken of the crime scene. A CID also has the role to write a report which includes all the documented evidence. In some cases the CID may also have to be present with court as an expert witness.
The O.J. Simpson Case
The first detective at the murder scene of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman was Mark Fuhrman. Although Fuhrman carried out a visual inspection of the crime scene he did not check that Robert Riske (First Attending Officer to arrive at the crime scene) carried out his role to set up the Common Approach Pathway correctly. Therefore due to his lack of professionalism this lead to much contamination the crime scene.
Fuhrman was also meant to lead the Scene of Crime Officers as they collected the evidence from the crime scene however he did not take control of the SOCO'S which lead to sloppy forensic collection. It was also Fuhrmans idea to place a blanket from inside Nicole Brown's house over the two bodies to prevent the media from taking photographs. However this just lead to more contamination at the crime scene which meant less evidence could be used in court and it was seen as useless due to the cross contamination.
At one point during the investigation Fuhrman was accused off committing the murder himself due to the ssuspicionthat he was planting evidence on O.J.Simpson such as the 'missing blood' from the vial that was taken from Simpson. Also Fuhrman entered on to O.J.Simpsons property without a warrant. Fuhram climbed over the back wall on to Simpson's property were he supposedly found the missing bloody glove and blood marks on the wall which he claimed were off O.J.Simpson.
