In order for an investigation to be successful it requires good planning, control, organisation and motivation. The purpose of carrying out and investigation plan is to identify the most appropriate line of inquiry and to determine the objective of pursing particular lines of inquiry. Another purpose of the investigation plan is to identify if the investigation action or actions are necessary to achieve the set objectives, to do this resources, priorities and necessity need to be considered. Through carrying out the investigation plan all crime scene evidence and material should be collected and gathered which may generate to further lines of inquiry. For the investigation plan to run smoothly consideration also needs to be taken in order to manage the impact on the community.
The O.J. Simpson Case
Robert Riske (in the left image), police officer, was the first authority figure to arrive at the murder scene of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Mark Furham (in the right image) was the first detective to the scene, both Riske and Furham did not prioritise what procedures needed to be carried out at the scene. This unorganised lead to critical mess ups within the investigation. As the media arrived before Scene of Crime Officers and other authority figures, the pressure was on for Riske and Furham. In the panic they covered Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman's body with a blanket they they took from inside of Nicole Simspons house. By doing so, both bodies were now contaminated from the blanket meaning that any evidence from the suspect that was left on their bodies was now useless. The crime scene was not handled in a professional and organised manner in any way by Riske and Furham. The first attending officer (FAO) who was Riske, should have set up a common approach path (CAP), this should have been set up so that when other authorities arrived at the scene they did not contaminate any evidence that was critical to the investigation. The FAO should have also corned off the crime scene with tape, this should have been done to prevent any unauthorised figures from entering the crime scene without authorised permission. This would have prevent contamination and movement of evidence.
